America's Veteran Stories

There are currently over 23 million military veterans living in the United States. We pass them routinely as we go about our day to day activities. Take the time to thank them for their service. Take the time to hear their stories. Their voice and experiences hold great significance for our future.

3Rs Construction is proud to honor our U.S. veterans on this special day. We recommend a special organization dedicated to preserving the remarkable stories of our veterans. Check out Hometown Heroes, America’s Veteran Stories

What is Veterans Day?

November 11, 1919 was the first anniversary of the end of World War I. It was called “Armistice Day” for the agreement signed between the Allies and Germany at 11 am on November 11, 1918. This is the significant reason that we commemorate Veterans Day on eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. President Eisenhower officially changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is a time to pay tribute to all American veterans - living or dead - but especially honor and thank living veterans who have served our country during war or peacetime. (Not to be confused with Memorial Day that honors those who died in service to our country.)

The History of Poppies on Veterans Day

When World War I came to an end, poppies were the first flowers to begin growing in the muddy battlefields of Northern France and Flanders. The appearance of the red poppies so moved Canadian surgeon, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae that he wrote this famous poem that was published in 1918:

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

American teacher, Moina Michael was inspired by the poem to raise money for disabled veterans by selling silk poppies. Her response to McCrae’s poem was her own motivating poem written in 1918:

We Shall Keep the Faith

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.
