2021 Colors of the Year in Review

3Rs Construction 2021 Colors of the Year in Review

Calm Variety is the Focus for the New Year

After a year that featured months of unexpected stresses, 2021 colors of the year focus on a variety of soothing and comforting tones that promote relaxation and calm.

Whether you are planning on painting your home exterior, giving a fresh coat to your kitchen, or giving new life to your master bedroom, there are sure to be colors in this review that will give you inspiration.

We start with Pantone color simply because it's the standard, universal color system used for graphics, fashion, and home. The two colors chosen this year couldn't be more opposite. Gray is neutral and makes a great backdrop for other colors, while this bright yellow is bold and happy. Pantone says it is "a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting."

Illuminating #13-0647 and Ultimate Gray #17-5104

3Rs Recommends: Use Ultimate Gray for your base cabinets in the kitchen with a soft color for the uppers. Illuminating would be perfect for an accent wall in a kid's room or game room!

Any version of teal is always an excellent choice for setting a good mood. Benjamin Moore selected Aegean Teal as its top pick with 11 other colors to complete the palette. They say this teal is "intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing... Aegean Teal creates natural harmony." And 3Rs agrees! This color stands out as versatile for walls, furniture, exterior, and accents. Combining Aegean Teal with one or two of the companion colors will give you great success!

Aegean Teal #2136-40

3Rs Recommends: Use Aegean Teal in your open-concept living space. Let it flow from your kitchen cabinets to an accent wall or as the color on the back of a bookshelf. Don't forget to include it in your accessories too!

Elevated Comfort is the name of the color palette chosen by Behr. And since it's 2021, they have 21 great, compatible tones to give you inspiration. They say this assortment "offers a mix of hues that evoke a collective desire for comfort to infuse creativity into the color selection process." It's amazing how this muted-tone palette varies in color but any two or three go very nicely together. This makes your choice very easy if you have a hard time making a decision.

Elevated Comfort Color Palette

3Rs Recommends: These are great colors for home exterior paint. Choose one for the base and another for trim. Select another opposite color for your front door. We think you'll love the results!

PPG chose three colors as their favorites for 2021. Their design experts say, "Both natural and serene...our paint colors bring warm lightness and a sense of calm to a space. This palette is also easy to use and flexible, made with versatile tones that can be used as either the supporting or dominant color in the room."  What 3Rs loves about this trio is that you can find these colors in the great outdoors. Anyone can bring them inside as a reflection of the beautiful areas you live in and love to explore.

Misty Aqua #PPG1147-3,   Big Cypress #PPG1062-5,   and Transcend #PPG1079-4

3Rs Recommends: Since we are home and inside more, these colors would be perfect for a man-cave, home office or student study space. Any single color can stand alone or combine two or all three in one space. You can't go wrong here!

Urbane Bronze stands out from the pack as it's the only single color and is dark and bold. Despite its dark tone, it is softened with gray tones and is very sophisticated. Sherwin Williams says, "Tap into nature with a hue whose warmth and comfort breathe down-to-earth tranquility."  If you're using Urbane Bronze on the walls, light furniture and accessories will pop! Because this color is earthly, other textures and finishes will stand out as fabulous features in your room.

Urbane Bronze #SW7048 (245-C7)

3Rs Recommends: This bold color would work great is a master suite to create a subdued and relaxing feeling to the room. If it's too much dark for you, just paint one wall.  Urbane Bronze would also be a great option for a dedicated theater room!

Valspar is on-trend with others this year in selecting a multi-color palette. These tones come in a perfect dozen and reflect calm, peace, and comfort. The hues are soft but varied and offer serene color that won't overwhelm.  Valspar offers these colors because it's "all about making you feel cozy and comfortable."  3Rs thinks this palette is perfect for the whole family because there is a color for every person in your home!  In fact, they would be great outside too.

Valspar 2021 Color-Trend Collection

3Rs Recommends: Any of these 12 colors would work great in a bathroom update. Whether you're just giving your bathroom a fresh coat of paint or doing a complete remodel, these colors will provide a fresh feeling to an overused room!

Well, 3Rs doesn't have a paint collection, but we do have colors that we really like. We chose these three colors because they represent Oregonian's love for outdoor living spaces. These colors are inspired by outdoor kitchens. They feature earthy, natural tones that bring calm and relaxation, perfect for recovering from a very strange year.

Stainless Gray  (RGB #232/232/232, DMYK #e8e8e8)
Barely Brown  (RGB #200/190/180, DMYK #c8beb4)
Celery Sage  (RGB #200/205/165, DMYK #c8cda5)

3Rs Recommends: Of course, we think these are the perfect colors for your outdoor kitchen, deck or patio. Don't limit using these colors in just paint! Look for color in stone, stains, appliances, and accessories. You deserve a nice place to relax!
